Large-headed, predominantly brown kingfisher with electric-blue back and wings, heavy red bill, and snow-white patch from the throat through the breast. Common both near and away from water; frequently seen perched on fence posts and telephone lines near wetlands, lakes, agricultural fields, and clearings

2024 July @Seethawaka The first observation is at Seethawaka.  This endemic beauty is   a medium-sized barbet at 21 cm. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, large head and short tail. සැළලිහිනියා/Sri Lanka hill myna(Gracula ptilogenys)

  2024 July @Seethawaka The first observation is at Udawatta sanctuary, Kandy.  This endemic beauty is  typically found in forest and cultivation. The Sri Lanka myna builds a nest in a hole. The normal clutch is two eggs. These 25 cm long birds have green-glossed black plumage, purple-tinged on the head and neck. There are large white wing patches, which are obvious in flight.
